Go Green and Save Money

With so much emphasis and attention being focused on conserving the resources of our planet, it's nice to know that there are a number of things you can do to help that cost little or no money.

Take a minute to think of what you can do from the list below. With the push of a control button, the turn of a faucet, the opening of a drapery, you can contribute to preserving the natural resources of Earth and saving money.

You can really improve air quality when you include fresh flowers and growing plants in your home. If you don't have a "green thumb," ask the gardening store what plants are easy-care and good air fresheners.

Put on More Clothes When It's Cold

Instead of turning up the heat, put on another sweater, a pair of socks, some silk long underwear. You'll be so much more comfortable, the air will feel fresher and cool, and you'll breathe easier.

Open the Window Coverings to Warm Up in the Winter

Even if it's cold outside, the rays of the sun will help to add a glow and bring warmth inside your home. So when the sun comes up, open the blinds and drapes and let the sun shine in. Your home will have a bright and cozy feeling.

Close Out the Cold

You'd be amazed how much cold air comes through cracks around doors and windows. Light a match to see where the wisps of air sneak through and caulk.

Turn Down the Heat

Use about 5% less energy each time you turn down your thermostat 1 degree! And that means you'll save money with each degree! WOW!

Close Up When It's Hot

Just as cold air sneaks in when it's cold outside, hot air in the summer can really warm up your home if you leave the windows open. Open the windows at night when it's cooler, but close them with the first sign of the thermostat rising. You'd be amazed how comfortable a home can stay when no hot air is sneaking in.

Take a Shower

Instead of soaking in a bathtub, take a shower. Because the water flows directly onto your body, it doesn't have to be heated so much. And you'll consume about 30% less water while getting just as clean. When you really need some "hydro therapy" in a tub, indulge. But for regular cleaning, shower.

Switch Light Bulbs

When it's time to change a burned-out light bulb, switch to a compact fluorescent light bulb. By changing just one bulb, you can save about $30 in energy costs over the light of the bulb. These bulbs last longer and emit less heat.

It's not too early to take little steps to help conserve our planet's resources. The added bonus is that you'll save money, too!
