These fabric shelves are ideal storage for a room where floor space is at a premium. You can store a wide variety of things, such as toys, shoes or clothes, and by adjusting the size of the shelves you can store much more.
A great idea for a nursery or children's bedroom.
You will need:
2m of 115cm wide fabric (large check print)
2.20m of 115cm wide contrasting fabric (wide stripe print)
1.50m of 115cm wide fabric (small check print)
5 rectangles of hardboard (3mm MDF/Supawood), each 39cm x 29cm
Note: Allow 10mm seams throughout.
Here's How:
1. Cut two rectangles of the large check print fabric for the outside panels, each 152cm x 32cm.
2. Cut two rectangles of stripe print fabric for the shelves and back, each 212cm x 42cm.
3. Cut eight squares of small check print for the inside panels, each 32cm x 32cm.
4. Cut one rectangle of small check print for the inside top, 62cm x 32cm.
5. With right sides facing, stitch stripe print pieces together along the short edges to form one long strip. Press the seam open. Press under 1cm at remaining short edges, edge stitch to finish.
6. Fold strip every 30cm to form five double-thickness open-backed shelves, with four single-thickness backs in between. Press.
7. With right sides facing, pin one small check print square to the top, back and lower edges of one side shelf. 1cm seam allowance at front edge of square will extend past finished shelf front. Clipping into corners, stitch around top, back and lower edges to form the shelf side. Press. Repeat for other seven squares to form the entire shelf unit.
8. With right sides facing, pin one large check print piece to side of shelf unit around the front, back and lower edges. Large check print piece will extend 31cm above top of shelf unit to form top hanging section. Clipping into corners, stitch around front, back and lower edges to enclose all seam allowances. Trim seams and turn to right side. Press. Repeat for other side.
9. With right sides facing, stitch top edges of large check print pieces together to form top hanging section. Press seam open.
10. With right sides facing, stitch small check print rectangle to top hanging section along front edge. Clipping into corners, stitch side edges of rectangle to side edges of top shelf, enclosing all seam allowances. Trim seams, turn to right side. Press.
11. Press under 1cm along back edges of top hanging section to enclose remaining seam allowances. Slip stitch together to finish.
12. Insert five rectangles of hard board into open backs of shelves to complete shelf unit. Top hanging section should then be suspended from an appropriate wall bracket.
