Annie and her husband, Whitney, take in the view from the home they rented in Aquinnah on Martha's Vineyard, Mass. Adding the colourful touches she is known for, Selke created a home family members could call their own for two weeks. The site and the view, on the oceanfront clay cliffs were spectacular; the interior, with the furnishings typical of summer rentals, not so much. But Annie Selke is an experienced makeover artist, who believes that even a temporary home is worth a little effort to make it more personal.
Lucky for her, she often finds what she needs at her own companies-bed linens from Pine Cone Hill, rugs from Dash & Albert, tableware from Potluck Studios-as well as pieces of her upholstered furnishings through Lee Industries. She almost always brings along her own linens, and sometimes even curtain panels, cotton rugs, and accessories, when she's renting a vacation house. Taking inspiration from seaglass hues and the abundant views, Annie selected a beachy palette of aqua's and greens, updated with brown and warmed with some bright sunset pink, transforming the place in about a day-so that she and her family could relax and enjoy the next two weeks.
For the dining alcove, Annie slipcovered the chairs in the same stripe as the sofa and placemats, and improvised a cover for the sun-damaged table by pulling some eyelet curtain panels into service as a tablecloth. Green tumblers spill over with gorgeous garden peonies. Their ruffled edges are echoed in white plates from Potluck Studios.
The cheerful riot of colour that is Pine Cone Hill's signature brings a big smile to a boxy room. Annie layered lime chenille blankets and pink polka-dot sheets with fuchsia crochet-edged pillow shams and a Kaffe Fassett quilt. Gingham curtain panels from Pine Cone Hill and an electric-striped side chair from the Pine Cone Hill Home Collection for Lee Industries demonstrate Annie's bold approach to colour and pattern.
Colourful rugs immediately refresh any home for summer. Use them to camouflage dingy wall-to-wall carpeting or linoleum floors, or to punch up a bare floor. To clean: Shake them outside, then roll them up when it's time to go home. Annie also likes ready-made curtain panels as a cheerful fix for bare windows or old blinds.
Sheets, blankets, and quilts can transform a bedroom, even if they can't improve a lumpy mattress. Annie often uses quilts to cover a worn sofa or as the foundation for a playful tablescape. She loves to layer the bed, even in the summertime, and changes the mix frequently. Try combining new and vintage to create your own look.
