Dress up a plain MDF / Supawood screen with fabric and paint for a pretty bedroom feature
You will need:
- Traditional three-panel screen
- Sandpaper
- Damp cloth
- Acrylic paint - celery green
- Thin foam or batting
- Craft knife
- Ruler and straightedge
- Plaid fabric and fabric to cut out your chosen images
- Spray mount
- Red permanent marker
- Scissors
- Sponge brush
- Clamps
- Small nails
- Decorative upholstery tacks
Here's how:
1. Lightly sand screen and wipe with damp cloth. Paint screen with acrylic paint - celery green. Let dry.
2. Measure and cut thin foam using a craft knife and straightedge to fit over the screen panel openings. Our screen had three panel openings, so we cut six panels • three to fit on the front of the screen and three to fit on the back.
3. Using a ruler, measure your fabric and cut enough to cover the sheets of foam, allowing 5 cm extra for folding edges over to the back side. Lay out foam panels on the front side of the fabric and mark with pencil around each side. Note: Plan each fabric piece at the same pattern repeat so all panels will look the same. Cut out fabric pieces.
4. Apply spray mount to the foam pieces, then centre onto the back of the fabric. Smooth front side to press out air bubbles.
5. Fold the four edges onto the back, mitring the corners. Note: Take extra care at the corners so the fabric does not get too bulky. If needed, trim excess fabric for a neater look. Adhere in place using spray mount. Repeat for all six panels.
6. Cut out images from contrasting fabric and spray mount onto the plaid fabric.
7. Use red permanent marker to freely trace the outlines and detail lines of the images and let dry.
8. Apply panels to screen using small nails equally spaced around the panels. Add decorative upholstery tacks to cover the nail head.
