Boxes in all shapes and sizes can be covered with fabric to make pretty and practical room accessories and provide useful storage space.
You will need:
- Cardboard boxes or thick card
- Strong glue
- PVA adhesive
- Spray adhesive
- Fabric [paper can also be used] - Ribbon
- Craft knife
Here's how:
To make a box: Score with craft knife and fold small side flaps inside the box; affix with strong glue or tape.
1. Apply spray adhesive to wrong side of lining fabric; affix to inside of box, allowing overlap onto bottom of box.
2. Cut out rectangle for inside base of box and apply fabric to top side with glue. Trim edges. Cover with fabric, fold under and glue down.
3. Use spray adhesive to affix fabric to sides, folding over top and bottom. Fold fabric into corners for neat finish.
4. Affix fabric rectangle to bottom, covering folded side edges.
5. Use diluted PVA glue to apply ribbon to inside of box to hide joins. Apply glue to neaten edges on outside of box.
6. Use the box template for the lid, the sides reduced to one-quarter the size, allow 2mm all round for a snug, but not-too-tight fit over the box. Cut fabric for the lid as shown; fold and glue as detailed above.

Design Tip:
Look for sturdy, smooth cardboard boxes with lids that do not fit too tightly.
Computer paper boxes and packing boxes work well. Smooth cardboard from stationery supply stores can also be used for making your own boxes.
