For the most striking effect, give the room a new two-tone coat of paint before installing these panels. Home improvement stores and building hardware suppliers carry the supplies that are needed for this project.
You will need:
Measuring tape
Level and straightedge
Pencil
2 coordinating colours of paint
Paintbrushes and rollers
2 x 20cm timber to fit the bracket and cove moulding
Decorative shelf brackets
Cove moulding (for in front of the bracket)
Screen moulding (for frames and vertical strips)
Wallpaper or fabric squares
Glue or staple gun
Finishing nails
Screwdriver and screws
Hammer
Wood filler
Here's how:
1. Measure horizontally, and paint. Measure 50cm down from the ceiling for the shelf height (or roughly a quarter of the way down your wall). Use a level and straightedge to pencil in a straight line, then paint the entire wall in coordinating colours above and below the line.
2. Determine width of headboard panel. Measure your mattress width. Add a few centimetres on either side so the vertical molding on the ends will extend beyond the mattress. Divide this number into four equal increments.
3. Paint the shelf, brackets, and molding as desired. Let dry.
4. Attach the shelf and moldings to the wall. Attach the brackets first, then the screen molding, cove moulding (which goes in front of the brackets), and the 2 x 20cm shelf.
5. Cut squares of wallpaper or fabric, then glue them to wall. To determine their size and placement, allow for a 10-12cm margin at the top, 2-3 cm inches between vertical strips and frame, and 20cm between baseboard and bottom frame.
6. Make frames for squares. Cut screen moulding to frame squares; to mitre the corners, measure the outside dimensions of the moldings, then cut from the inside edge to the outside edge. This makes the cuts go with the grain, leaving a smoother edge. Paint the frame pieces, and nail in place.
7. Finish. Fill nail holes, and touch up paint
