Increase the feeling of light and space in your bathroom with a custom-made mirror with the frame stained to suit your colour scheme. This one was designed with the Zen bathroom in mind. Increase the feeling of light and space in your bathroom with a custom-made mirror with the frame stained to suit your colour scheme

You will need:

Unframed mirror
6mm MDF for mirror backing
Tape measure and pencil
Jigsaw
Dust mask
All-purpose glue and wood glue
Planed timber for frame
Mitre box and saw
Wood stain
Paintbrush
Screwdriver and screws

Lay the mirror on the sheet of MDF and mark its position with a pencil. Brush wood stain in a colour to suit your room scheme over the wooden frame

Here's how:
1. Lay the mirror on the sheet of MDF and mark its position with a pencil. Allow for the width of the wooden frame around the mirror, mark the required dimensions of the MDF backing. Using a jigsaw (wear a safety mask) cut the MDF to size.

2. Apply all-purpose glue to the back of the mirror and press firmly on to the centre of the MDF using the pencil marks as a guide. Let dry.

3. Measure the length of all four sides of the MDF and cut the planed timber to these lengths, using a mitre box to cut the angled corner accurately. Using wood glue, press each piece firmly in place to create the frame around the mirror and leave to dry (pic 3).

4. Brush wood stain in a colour to suit your room scheme over the wooden frame. Leave to dry. Build up the colour with successive coats until you are happy with the finish, leaving each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next (pic 4).

5. Finish by attaching a hanging plate to the back of the mirror. Hang your mirror on the wall in the desired position.

Design Tip:
If you are feeling more adventurous, try stencilling the frame for a more decorative effect, or opt for a paint technique such as crackling or dragging for a stylish look.
